My decorating style is all sparkles when it comes to the holidays, but I also enjoy some quiet little moments around the house to ensure that things don't get too out of control. This year, I think I'll take some inspiration from a more natural minimal look to add to the mix...



Bare branches adorned with simple little ornaments and fresh - but not heavy - garland on the windows. The tree will sparkle, and the rest of the house will shimmer. Add in lots of glowing candlelight and I'll soon be living in a winter wonderland!

WHEN IN DOUBT...

Ok, kids, here's the deal. I cannot for the life of me decide on a sofa for my apartment. For a long time now, I've been dreaming of this one because I love the petite shape and how feminine it is, and it's actually quite comfortable. But then I saw this one...

And it was love at first peek! My default setting for moments of panic and confusion when it comes to my interiors (and my closet for that matter) is to go with black and white. And while it is, admittedly, a very safe choice, it's also very classic.

I adore the black trim detail and how cozy the piece looks. And, there will still be plenty of color in my own space to keep things soft and playful. While I'd be looking at doing it in a bit more modern shape, I'd keep the skirt and all. Still feminine and traditional, but a very different look from my original inclination... so what do you think? Do I go for it?

GOOD GOURD.

When you live in an apartment without a porch or patio, there's really no good place to place your Halloween pumpkins. I've basically got two options - put one out in the hallway (where I don't get to enjoy it) or keep it in the house where lighting it seems a little silly. So I'm thinking option number three might be called for this year...

Take a little inspiration from your own home and paint that pumpkin right on up to match!

It's fresh, festive and fairly easy. Not to mention a little less messy. I think I may do a last minute attempt for tonight! Also - that bedroom? Definitely going on the inspiration board for my own place. Loving the layers of white!

INTERIORS TO INSPIRE: REFINED BLACK + WHITE

Hi everyone! Julie here from Chapman Interiors sharing a beauty of a home today. Black and white is at once classic and bold; a unique combination really for a pair of neutrals. I can't think of many others that can evoke such glamour! And this home is a prime example of clean and simple lines highlighted in black and white - a true classic.


I especially love the striking X base of the table paired with the gentle swoop of the tulip chairs. And black-edged shades on the chandelier perfectly echo the fine lines of its structure.   

Spaces flooded with light are always beautiful, and this is no exception. Although I might like to see a touch of color here, even just in a flower arrangement, the simplicity of the palette allows the lines of the pieces to really stand out - especially in the cocktail table and miniature stools (so cute!) 

This bed is feminine and simple at the same time. Being that it's higher off the ground it lets light sneak under, giving it a floating quality (heightened by the high-gloss floors- love that unexpected feature in a bedroom!). Again, the lines speak for the space here, and I like how cohesive that feels throughout the home.


Let's make our own space using this home as our guide. The basics? Larger pieces are white, black is found in delicate frames and legs throughout, draperies are griege and very full, and floors lean to the lighter end of the spectrum...



Do we like it? Simple yet intentional, like there's a plan. The sofa is a modern lovely (evokes that tulip chair yes?) and the chandelier couldn't be more perfect with its hints of black. A simple floor lamp and pretty white dresser (swap out those silver knobs for black!), some heafty foliage and a gently patterned rug makes me click my heels together... maybe it's my last ditch effort to hold on to the lighter days of summer, but I'm loving this airy feel. You?

GEOMETRIC GLAMOUR

There's something about geometric patterns that set my heart a-racing. Maybe it's my type A hyper organized brain but when I see patterns like Kubus from Pierre Frey (used below in the curtains) I simply swoon...

It may have something to do with the use of linen and gold too. Unfortunately, there's nothing about Pierre that's very affordable (although as a designer, I still get a pretty wonderful discount!). And when considering yards and yards of it for curtains in my bedroom, I just can't seem to commit. So when I stumbled upon this image by Gilles Trillard, I had a moment of brilliance...

Calm down... I'm not going to go painting walls or anything crazy. But I did think... what if I could find a black and white geometric fabric that I could simply paint the gold onto? Because how stunning would these walls be if they just had a little metallic in them here and there? I think even keeping the placement of the gold slightly random would be beautiful.

Also, let's back up a sec - those walls? Amazing. They remind me of a project I did in art class my junior year of college. I hated that assignment, but now I'm starting to appreciate my teacher for making me do it. Because this? This kind of art my organized brain could definitely handle. I got an A in that class. Geometry? Not so much.

BLACK + WHITE BOUDOIR

If yesterday's post on Delfina's pied-à-terre didn't hint that this was coming, well, then someone wasn't paying attention... 

*ahem*. My current bedroom inspiration. White, black and gold. I am in love. The fabric will either be used for drapes or upholstering a chair I currently own that needs a little facelift. I want the shapes and a few acent pieces to hint at a Moroccan influence without going too over the top. I may, however, need to purchase a small authentic Moroccan wedding blanket or rug to balance all the 'new' and keep things from getting overly Hollywood Regency. And for the record - that dresser? It's a changing table. If you can point me in the direction of a dresser that looks exactly like this, I'll take it, but I'm currently fantasizing about those deep drawers...

TIMELESS GLAM: BLACK + WHITE + GOLD

The second I saw the tour of jewelry designer Delfina Delettrez's Parisian palazzo in Harper's last month, I fell in love with the chic simplicity of her style...

After moving into my new apartment with all-white walls, I'm tempted to follow suit, but I don't think I could manage this much color minimalism for the whole place.

So, I'm tempted to just do the bedroom in black, white, and metallics. With an underlying Moroccan theme to it, but nothing too obvious. One area in which I will definitely be mimicking her style, however, is the attention to beautiful detail.

Like that cute little gold cactus and perfectly quirky floating shelf. Not to mention as many vintage and antique pieces as I can afford. They always add so much more personality.

MY MILLION-DOLLAR OFFICE

I know many of you have been following along in the drama, decor, and dahlings that are the Million-Dollar Decorators on Bravo. Well, today - to celebrate the season finale - I was asked by Bravo to put together a million-dollar challenge: an inspiration board for my dream office space worthy of these fabulous designers. Lucky for them (and me!) it's one of my most favorite spaces to fantasize about... 

And here she is! Would miss Mary (and the rest of the gang) approve? I wanted the space to feel light, yet dramatic, and was inspired by the Schumacher Birds and Butterflies fabric, my obsession with malachite, and my all-time favorite desk by Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair - completely customized of course. Needless to say... an unlimited budget comes in handy.

INTERIORS TO INSPIRE: A BLACK AND WHITE DANCE

Most decor falls into a primarily feminine or masculine category, and while I've seen plenty of well-mixed spaces, none have been done quite like this...


Curvy Corinthian columns welcome us to one of the sweetest living rooms this girl has ever laid her eyes on (PS, Julie from Chapman Interiors, here!). The columns are undoubtedly a feminine architectural element, and as we examine the room we find very modern (masculine) pieces floating around, mixing with relaxed slip-covers and embroidered pillows.

 
It's not always easy to mix styles when they're on the far ends of the spectrum, so why is it working so well here? Because most of the pieces are black or white - totally neutral. Contrast offers drama but also provides an underlying rhythm. The detail that made me really fall for this space? Those chalky walls had me had hello.


A modern and traditional dance continues in the kitchen with the powerful black cabinets and classic herringbone floors.  Notice how the clean palette makes the wood details and furniture really stand out? Love that.

Let's use the cues to make our own space, and I have great news about this one, 1) Because the bones are neutral they remain super flexible over the years and 2) oh-my did we find some very well-priced pieces!



We started with a modern chair set a top a natural jute rug, then introduced an archictural side table  reminding us of the columns in the inspiration home. (I'm assuming you don't have 6' corinthian columns in your home? and if you do, well then, we're all quite jealous.) Recycled glass with oversize greenery adds a garden-feel. A modern morrocan pendant with the gold peacock mirror brings in our international flair. Don't forget a striking black dresser to mix in some of the high contrast elements (whoa good price!). A few more details ( a weathered urn, wooden bowl to evoke those herringbone floors- and soft pillow) make the space complete.


Voilà. Feminine meet Modern. Modern, this is Femme. You two play nicely now.

SPELLED OUT IN BLACK + WHITE

One of the things I love the most about all my creative friends and design lovers...

We notice and appreciate the littlest details, the smallest threads of commonality, and the most random pieces of inspiration...



While traveling, I felt like I was seeing these places and people through quite a different eye than I did the last time around - so many beautiful details. But the one I noticed most? Black and white. Those Italians, they know how to keep in style - keep it simple.

CHIC LITTLE ENTRYWAYS

Currently obsessing over fresh + fantastic entryways like these...

With tile like this you can hardly call it a 'mud room', but with plenty of storage for coats and shoes, this entry is the chicest definition of the term I've ever seen (plus, you know I'm loving the black + white stripes at the doorway!).

Love the depth a little black paint gives to this simple entryway, and the vintage accents give it great character. A vibrant orange door is so cheery and welcoming! I love how the collection of artwork in gold frames echoes the color against fresh white walls.

As a side note... I'm totally returning to black and white palettes these days. I realized that sometimes I'm too afraid to add a little black to a room, thinking that somehow it doesn't work with softer styles, but it really just adds a wonderful touch of drama!

I LOVE...

I'm pretty sure there is no possible way this DVF bag could get any better...


The broad stripes with tan strap and red lining make it irresistible. Pairing it with this vintage Ferragamo cuff, however, might be the best mind-blowing combination ever.
