ROOM OF THE WEEK 3.31

Sometimes I really have to dig deep into my files to find a worthy Room of the Week... and today I came up with and old favorite...
    elledecor.june5
I have always adored the lightness of this room - the way the chairs' thin lines combine with the lucite table makes it feel like there's hardly any furniture at all! The white chandelier almost disappears into the ceiling, and the simply trimmed shades add just the right touch of detail.

If you see the adjacent living room, it makes sense as to why it's all so simplistic...
    elledecor.june8
Quite a bit of pattern and pops of color going on in here! Designing a space in the round can be tough, but I like how this one was done. I also love how the trim in the pillows echoes the trim on the shades! For some reason, it's not quite my style... do you prefer one space over the other other? Would you take them both? I'll stick with the dining room.

SO MUCH TO ADORE!

A huge thank you goes out today to Loni Parker at Adore Magazine for asking me to contribute to their latest issue by sharing a few of my current favorites...
    Picture 4
Some of you may recognize the lamp - it's my latest lighting obsession - but the three other pieces are just as lustworthy, and definitely at the top of my list right now too!

Along with my little feature - two of my most favorite moments in the mag...
    adore+home.april.bar
This stunning, stunning bar - can you imagine if you could recreate this in your own sunporch?
    adore+home+magazine pink blue white bedroom
And a beautiful bedroom with just the right amount of color pop. Femme, but not overly fussy - I like.

You can check out their entire issue (with a huge focus on bedrooms and links to all my favorites) right here!

A FLOWING FLORAL CHANDELIER

I've been spending time the last few days searching for some spring installation ideas for a project I have up my sleeve, when I came across this stunning floral 'chandelier'...
    nicole hollis.yedda morrison.floral installation
It was part of the San Francisco Decorator's Showhouse back in 2009 - I had one of the images saved in my inspiration files, but did some digging and found out a little more...
floral chandelier installation san francisco decorators showcase
The designer for the entryway, Nicole Hollis, commissioned artist Yedda Morrison to create this stunning centerpiece to the hall, setting the tone for an indoor/outdoor feel. The framed butterfly art adds perfectly to the botanical feel, and the natural linen drape does the same.  Now I'm curious how hard this would be to pull off on a smaller scale for an intimate spring dinner... hmmmmm....

GINGHAM + MILITARY + PILES OF JEWELS

It's official. Two of my favorites are doing it, so you know it's good...
    sterling style
    atlantic-pacific
I love the way these fabulous ladies (Sterling Style and Atlantic-Pacific) layered up their preppy gingham with chunky jewels and masculine army jackets to toughen things up. Add in touch of this spring's hottest trends (open weave knits and florals) and you've got two seriously winning combinations. Do it up, girls!

INTERIORS TO INSPIRE: MID-CENTURY GLAMOUR

Purple has been on my radar now for quite a while, (a year ago there's a good chance I would have laughed at you with a suggestion of this color, but since then it's really grown on me). I tend to gravitate towards deeper color palettes, with the occasional exception - and today's insanely beautiful home is that exception. With a heavy handed dose of lilac (a little warmer than it's blue-based sister, lavender) this home manages to still make a bold statement.
The retro, graphic art is such a fantastic focal point in this space. And usually, two similarly textured materials side by side is a no-no, but here the velvet sofa and velvet stools work beautifully with their monochromatic scheme. The tufting on the sofa and smoothness of the stool helps the pairing work. (And I'm loving the grey-blue with the warm violet.)
From the living room, we find a saturated lilac in the dining room... (how much do you adore the pop of fresh green in there too?)
Where the lovely, appropriately springtimey color coats the walls - in the darker lighting it takes on a plum tone, don't you think? The seriousness of wood and gilded antiques makes the casual lilac less immature.
Clearly this home owner has an eye for art - the wave painting is full of movement and life. And there are our purple stools again (they certainly are getting around the house quite well for not being able to walk).

The style of the space is 60's glamour meets fashionable antiques. And how does that translate into a space? Like this...

Using the pair of foot stools as inspiration, we added two of Robbery Abbey's Delta lamp (in lilac) on the ornate sideboard. The Louis side chair adds to the antique collection while pairing it with a chrome side table strikes the perfect contrast (and balance) to complete the mid-century glam feel. The deep ochre upholstery compliments the soft lilac. If you are up for painting your walls, try Benjamin Moore Frozen in Time #1448 or Cabernet, # 2116-30.

I happen to be loving ochre and purple right now, and am always a fan of mixing styles, so this room is really doing it for me... what do you think?
    xoxo

PESKY HEIRLOOMS

One question I get asked a lot as an interior designer and blogger is, "How do I mix my family heirlooms in with my modern/classic decor?" The answer??
    lonny antique chest bedroom
Despite the many many rooms I have in my inspiration files exhibiting eclectic styles mixed and matched, it seems to be a challenge that in real life people have a very hard time tackling. Do you find that to be true for you, as well?

My quick answer is, it's all about balance and proportion and not being afraid to let that piece stand out. My follow up answer is - heirloom or not, if you hate it, you'll never be happy with it. Find a happy home for it elsewhere.

PS - I love this bedroom. It feels very grown up... in a really good way. (via lonny)

BEHIND THE SCENES: RUE COLOR TREND PAGES

Ever wonder how those many market pages in the front of magazines get put together? Well, I don't know how the other mags do it, but here's a peek behind my process as the Market Editor at Rue!

When I begin putting together the color trend pages, I usually start with pulling runway shots and interiors that appeal to me in the moment, coming up with a few different options to select from. For Issue #4 I wanted to find a combination of color that included some of the bold colors that we're seeing in the marketplace, while still remaining sophisticated and realistic as palette that others would want to imitate in their home or wardrobe...
    tumblr_lao7twzslt1qc7jkjo1_1280
There were many options (a few of which you may see in future issues!) but I kept returning to two images - the room above and the Tracy Reese runway look below. The palette conjured up images of vacationing in the Caribbean while being soft enough for spring - a perfect mix! Then comes the fun (and challenging!) part... shopping!
    marine+layer coco+kelley
Once the palette is chosen, I spend hours and hours combing through my favorite sites to find pieces that might make the page. Then, I send all my options on to our Art Director, Bri, and we pick the best of the best to make the page. And the leftovers? Well, usually they get ditched, but today they get their day in the sun right here. I especially love the striped options because they mimic the original room... what are your favorites?

MOODBOARDS + MONDAYS

Well, a few things didn't happen this weekend. *1. I didn't get to go off on my little weekend getaway (due to a hacking cough and sudden loss of voice) and *2. I also didn't spend the entire weekend working (which is quite a miracle). Instead, I took the time to do some things I haven't done in a while... say, since last summer?

This is one of two bulletin boards above my desk - one serves for inspiration and the other organization - and this weekend I was looking at it and realized... I have rebuilt my inspiration since last August. How did I know? Because the calendar (to the right below) told me so...
    coco+kelley august inspiration board
    coco+kelley august inspiration board2
"Ridiculous," I thought to myself and immediately began pulling the tear sheets down. But, not before I snapped a few pics to share - after all, that's what inspiration is for, right? The board was during my citron color trend obsession last summer, and I loved the way it looked paired with a strong coral/pink and unexpected black. My goal for this week? Some new inspiration to freshen things up around here and share with you all as soon as I can!

Happy Monday lovelies! Let's make it a fantastic week, shall we?

COCKTAILS AT SIX: THE SALTY DOG

It’s a bit blustery today, which is only fueling the feel of Spring sweeping through the park...

On my way to meeting up with girlfriends, I’m in flux as to what to sip on as we catch up over the week’s adventures. Nothing frou-frou today I muse. No, something classic will do the trick...a something in blush that hints of future citrusy days to come.

    The Salty Dog

4 oz. freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
    2 oz. Hendrick’s gin
1/4 teaspoon salt mixed with 1/8 tsp sugar, for rimming

Pour all ingredients over ice cubes in a highball glass rimmed with salt/sugar mixture. Stir well & serve. Serves 1.

THE GOODY BAG: FROM WESTWEEK

Wednesday was the beginning of Westweek at the Pacific Design Center - a week of lectures, events, parties and more for the interior design world of Los Angeles. And there were parties. And more parties. And did I mention parties?

I'm Alissa of The Goods Design, here to bring you the best of the best of Los Angeles' interior design parties, people, places and things. My first stop for the fabulous fetes was the James Perse outdoor furniture showroom opening. It had the key elements necessary for a fabulous party: margaritas and a ping-pong table. The ping pong table was a huge hit - Jessica of Life's Little Jems dominated!
    <span class=
The furniture was divine. The flowers were gorgeous. The line to the bar went out the door. All signs of a raging success!
    <span class=
Just around the corner was the Elle Decor/Brown Jordan party. Even though it was pouring rain in LA, it felt like summer with all these outdoor furniture fetes!
    <span class=
Me and Michael Boodro {editor-in -chief of Elle Decor} enjoying the gorgeous Brown Jordan showroom.

There were loads of succulents, modern outdoor furniture and fabulous LA designers.
    <span class=
    {Brooke Gardner, Amanda Malson of Domicile ID, Vanessa De Vargas of Turquoise & Jolene Ballard of Domicile ID}

After all this party hopping, I'm off to soak my feet! It's a tough life, but someone's gotta do it!
