FOODIE FASHIONISTA: HOLIDAY CITRUS

Hello, hello dear readers! Crissie of Chicasaurus-Rex here, bringing you another non-traditional holiday color palette. When my copy of J. Crew's holiday catalog arrived I fell in LOVE with this orange+teal+purple combo. Let's re-imagine it as a party-ready ensemble, shall we? (And, show up with this blood orange, honey-glazed tart in tow and you're sure to get an invite to every party next year...)

LET'S TALK (AND TWEET!) TABLETOPS

I feel like I've been tabletopping like crazy lately. It starts in October with my birthday, then Thanksgiving, of course Christmas, and then there's New Year's... needless to say, it's not always easy to keep fresh ideas coming.

It also gets a bit challenging to use the same pieces in my cupboard over and over in new ways. Which is why I was thrilled when T.J.Maxx/Marshalls offered me the chance to do a little shopping for my Christmas table!
    IMG_3255
Department store prices for a totally new tabletop would probably get me as far as a set of new dinner dishes. If that. A couple of hours in my local T.J.Maxx, and I came away with a set of four dinner, salad and dessert dishes, new champagne flutes, and a mercury glass vase for the table...
    christmas tabletop TJMaxx1
As well as some decor that I could use on the table or buffet. This sequined nutcracker might be my new favorite addition! And let's not forget parting gifts for guests - always a must! The perfect packaging on these hot chocolate tins means all they need is a little ribbon to finish them off...
    christmas tabletop TJMaxx2
So here it is - the beginnings of my table inspiration. The Kate Spade dessert plates (on top) sparked my plan for metallics mixed with a pop of Tiffany blue. While I've been gravitating towards gold lately, the silver in the china made me think mercury glass, so I'm hoping to mix the trees into the table too ...
    IMG_3241
Oh, and did I mention that I snagged a white herringbone tablecloth? Yep. And all of this for under $150. With brand names like Kate Spade and Lenox? You've got to be kidding me. I honestly had no idea that I'd find such quality pieces for so little. (And yes I know I sound like a commercial, but it's true!)

So now it's time to put it all together and I'd love your help! Since we're talking so much tabletop around here, I thought I'd invite you all to a Twitter party tomorrow at 5pm PST / 8pm EST for the chance to win a $100 certificate to do a little of your own shopping at TJ Maxx or Marshalls!

I'd love to hear your ideas on how you'd set up my table using these pieces, your own tabletop challenges and successes this season (bring your photos!), and how you'd use the $100 to give your tabletop an update. (Maybe you need some fancy new flatware, are ready to replace your hand-me-down dishes or could use some festive decor?) Follow me at @casslavalle and use the hashtag #MarshallsTJMaxx. I'll see you on twitter tomorrow!

THE OVERHYPED CHRISTMAS TREE REVEAL!

When I posted my Christmas tree inspiration (right here) in the beginning of December, I had lofty ambitions. Unfortunately, time and budget got the best of me and I couldn't quite pull together the vision I had in mind.

When I finally spent some time last week hunting for the perfect ornaments, I realized that unless I wanted to drop at a few hundred bucks on new decorations, I was going to have to settle for indulging in just a few new ornaments and trim instead. Which is just what I did...
    IMG_3378
First of all - the tree itself was sent to me by Treetopia, was incredibly easy to put together, and afforded me the chance to get a little risky and indulge in a black tree!

I knew I wanted to go with black, whites and metallics, so I started with the ornaments I already had...
    black christmas tree decor
Gold, white, cream and silver balls, icicles and snowflakes were all on hand. I added the 'confetti' ornaments from Crate & Barrel to match the white pom pom ribbon trim. Then I realized I needed a thicker garland and layered on the black+cream striped ribbon too.
    IMG_3362
I bought the tassels when I thought I still might be able to go in my Indochine inspired direction. I kept them anyway.
    IMG_3356
    IMG_3376
Flanking the tree with my new chairs (from Z Gallerie) and their glittery pillows cozied things up a bit - something you kinda need to do with a black tree. Lesson learned? A theme tree means going big or going home... maybe next year I'll go bigger, but for now I'm perfectly happy with this dramatic new addition for the living room.

FANTASY TO FÊTE: HOLIDAY COCKTAILS

'Tis the party season, m'dears; hope you're all getting in the spirit! Camille here, with a major dose of holiday festivity that includes the requisite amounts of bubbly + bling...

Our inspiration board is brimming with shimmer and shine: a cool palette of silver and champagne echoes an icy winter landscape, while touches of black add a dash of sophisticated polish. I think this is my dream look for the swanky holiday cocktail party I'm dying to host as a perfect excuse to break out the silver, ice down bottles of Veuve and slip into something sparkly.

Champagne and oysters make a natural pairing for a luxe spread of hors d'oeuvres - for a more cost-effective yet equally-festive option, try my recipes for Ginger-Spiced Cider and the Perfect Cheese Plate.

There's nothing I love more than a long communal table full of family, friends and loads of flickering candlelight. Serve food family style so everyone can help themselves, allowing you to be a guest at your own party.

For this table, I'm sticking to a snowy white palette for the arrangements of garden roses, peonies, tulips and hydrangeas. Silver or mercury glass vessels reflect the light beautifully and bring an aged patina to the table that feels so right at this time of year. For more floral inspiration and how-to's, check out a similar centerpiece we put together at my house.

I fell so in love with these silver, gold and white stockings from Crate & Barrel that I bought them for my own house this year! A mantle adorned with silvery tinsel and golden votives looks so magical above the glow of the fire.

CLEAN + BRIGHT

My decorating style is all sparkles when it comes to the holidays, but I also enjoy some quiet little moments around the house to ensure that things don't get too out of control. This year, I think I'll take some inspiration from a more natural minimal look to add to the mix...

    simple branch garland christmas holiday1
    simple branch garland christmas holiday3
Bare branches adorned with simple little ornaments and fresh - but not heavy - garland on the windows. The tree will sparkle, and the rest of the house will shimmer. Add in lots of glowing candlelight and I'll soon be living in a winter wonderland!

WRAP IT UP... IN CYNTHIA ROWLEY!

Cynthia Rowley is getting quite creative with a slightly new direction. The fashion designer is applying her favorite runway patterns to wrapping paper, available exclusively on One King's Lane, and I for one am in love!
    cynthia rowley wrapping paper
The black is my absolute favorite and would go so well with my Christmas theme this year..
    cynthia rowley wrapping paper1
And the multicolor, so fun and festive! I'd pair it with a rainbow of ribbon!

Pick up your own set of 15 sheets for $32 on One Kings Lane. The best part is, of course, that these aren't so holiday that you have to save them for Christmas! They'd be fabulous for wrapping gifts (especially for your fashionista friends) all year round. I'm off to order a set or two!

THE STOCKINGS WERE HUNG...

    This is happening. Now.
    photo
The whole flight back from LA all I could think of was how I couldn't wait to get back home and finally put up my Christmas decor.  Hot cocoa has been made. My classic holiday tunes are playing. And I'm coming up with a million ideas for how to decorate my black Christmas tree.

Oh, and in case you're wondering? Both stockings are for me. Because no boy would allow one of those to be his. (Duh.)

Many many more pics to come soon, I'm sure!

AN UNCOMMON CHRISTMAS

Sooo.... I ordered a black Christmas tree on Friday. I'm not sure what inspired me to go in this total opposite direction (I've always had metallic or white!) other than I thought it was time for something with a little more drama...

I'm a traditionalist at heart, but you know that I like to shake things up with my holidays and do something a little unexpected. Christmas has never been red, white and green for me, so I'm starting to collect some ideas for where I'll be taking this black tree. I spy stripes, lace, birds and feathers, mirrors, snow capped branches, and plenty of lanterns - all with a very Indochine inspired vibe. What do you think? Extreme? Or exciting?

ANATOMY OF AN ANTHRO TABLETOP

If there's one thing I love more than designing interiors, it's putting together a fabulous tabletop. Needless to say this time of year is heaven for me. And, a few weeks ago I got to indulge in some serious tabletop designing with a little event I did at Anthropologie here in Seattle...
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop6
When I was a merchandiser, I remember how many shoppers would get overwhelmed by the variety of dishware offered at the store and ask for help on how to mix them with their current patterns. So, when I started talking with Anthropologie about doing an event I immediately knew what I wanted to do...
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop11
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop1
I set up a little table where one side was a bit more colorful and whimsical and the other more monochromatic and classic - both of which took the best of current Anthropologie dishes, stemware and other tabletop accessories - and layered them on up!
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop5
On the 'blue' side (with the black tablecloth) I chose a few different patterns in the same colorway and changed up the way they were layered in each setting. The stemware was all different but all clear glass, and I rotated my favorite tumblers that also happened to be in the same palette of the dishes.
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop7
On the 'colorful' side (with the red tablecloth), I started with large white dishes as the base, then a fun Nathalie Lete plate (le pomme is my favorite!), a different salad dish at each setting, and topped them with those adorable flamestitch bowls. Keeping most of the pieces consistent - just in different colors - made the settings feel a little more cohesive but still very playful. I also used all colored stemware.
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop2
I was so happy to have an intimate group to gab with about the settings, explaining how and why I selected the pieces I did (I spy miss Maggie of Maggie Rose and Jenn from Bowtie and Bustle!) .
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_hostess gift
I also put together a small table of some of my most favorite gifts (mostly for the hostess, but I'm sure any gal would be happy to receive these packages!)
    anthropologie_cocokelley_hostess gifts1
While I love a 'themed' gift (in the case above a kitchen calendar, cookbooks, and whisk), I also think gifts look good in color schemes (like below with the mini latte bowls, chevron frame, and holiday candle all in red).
    anthropologie_cocokelley_hostessgifts2
Of course the most fun part was after my little 'presentation' when everyone got to do some serious shopping!
    anthropologie_cocokelley_fall_tabletop10
If you're still figuring out your holiday tabletop, or looking to add even one new element this year, better hop on over to Anthropologie quick. Many of the dishes I used are currently on sale! And, if you have any questions on the pieces I used, feel free to leave them a comment and I'll do my best to answer.  I had so much fun collaborating with Anthropologie on this event, and I hope it's something I'll be able to do with them again!

*a huge thanks to nicole at sunshine charlie for all for all of the amazing photos!!! please give her proper credit if you re-post!

FROM FANTASY TO FÊTE: MASQUERADE DINNER

Camille Styles here, with this week's party fantasy in onyx and white. I couldn't let Halloween pass us by without squeezing in one spooky-themed soirée...

Our inspiration board is chic and simple in a strict palette of black and white. This Halloween fête is more sophisticated than creepy…a masquerade ball, perhaps? Goth-romantic invitations, dark hors d’oeuvres and an onyx ball gown are perfectly fitting for such an occasion.

The strength of this table design comes from the black-on-black styling...illuminated by candlelight, a full moon and that fabulous seventies disco ball. A lacy tablecloth, gothic chandeliers and moss creeping across the entire table completes the mood.

Ask guests to come wearing masks to add to the sense of mystery...and it doesn't hurt that these glittery, lacy masks are pretty chic accessories, if you ask me!

Since Halloween is really all about candy, I'd incorporate plenty of sweets into the evening. These figs and candied fruit are perfect for dipping into a pot of warm fondue. And my gooey, melty brownie pudding would make an excellent grand finale.

It all looks pretty magical, no? Hope you all have a ghoulishly glam Halloween, and see you back here in November for some major Thanksgiving party inspiration!
